Abstract

In capital’s current ecological phase, it’s become commonplace to justify territorial de¬cisions by adhering them to environmental causes. This adherence can be considered a symptom of an urbanization process in which nature and space are rarities – which the State distributes according to political decisions, but manages to disseminate as the most fair and positive for the whole community. This article, resorting to authors such as Lefebvre (1991, 2008), Harvey (1996) and O’Connor (1993), evaluates the rules and the urban plan of the “Urban Operation” [Operação Urbana] of Isidoro, in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), seeking to apprehend the mechanisms through which protected areas are strategically placed in the production of urban space, legitimizing certain spatial practi¬ces and capitalist interests.
